What will my students experience?
Washington state history and the study of Native Americans in the Northwest are common in 3rd through5th grade in Washington State. Tillicum is the perfect combination for you and your students to experience both the history and culture of the region.
You and your students will be sailing some of the same waters traveled by Captain George Vancouver in 1792. These were also the home and fishing grounds to the local Coast Salish tribes. Blake Island was an ancestral camping ground of the Suquamish Tribe, and, according to the Burke Museum, Chief Sealth (Seattle) was born on this very island! Young minds will soon discover why we need to cherish and protect our surroundings. Students will begin a journey of understanding diversity as they witness the ancient culture of our Native American forefathers.
Your special voyage to Blake Island runs 9:30a.m. -1:30p.m. and departs from Seattle's Central Waterfront, Pier 55 (Pier 55 Directions).
On the boat ride over, students will experience storytelling and discover the importance of salmon. Once they arrive at the longhouse, they will savor a delicious hot lunch featuring our award-winning baked salmon, prepared using the traditional Northwest Coast Indian method. Our lunch is designed with students in mind and in addition to the salmon and bread the menu is a modified version of our public dining experience.
During lunch the lights dim and your students will be engaged in a truly authentic Coast Salish Tribe experience. The new show, which opened in March of 2011 was created by working directly with members from local tribes. From the storytelling to the handmade regalia, each element of the show is unique and true to the Coast Salish Tribes.
Following the exciting stage presentation you’ll have time to explore the island and shore on your own, or gather with others in the Heritage Room to look at artwork (it houses some beautiful masks and artwork as well as samples of basketry and everyday items such as fishing weights) or the hand-carved Totem poles on the grounds. Staff will be on hand to answer questions.
The 45-minute return trip is unstructured, giving both you and your students time to relax before heading back to the classroom. The boat arrives back at Pier 55 at 1:30p.m.
Every child should have the opportunity experience Tillicum Village and a piece of Northwest culture. We look forward to seeing you and your students during our 2012 School Program. (Note: The school program is designed for Elementary and Middle School Students.)

School Functions, Auctions & Dances
The facility on Tillicum Village is the perfect locale for a private function from a Prom or year-end event to your school auction. Think of it, an island all to yourself! The facility can hold nearly 1,000 people and the stage can accommodate small bands or DJs. In addition, food can be modified to suit your group.
